Supporting Parents and Carers - A guide for those working with families affected by child sexual abuse - The Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre) has published a guide to help professionals provide a confident, supportive response to parents and carers when concerns about the sexual abuse of their child have been raised or abuse has been identified. The guide explains: the impact that sexual abuse has on the whole family; the importance of the role of the main care givers and wider family in supporting a child who has been abused; and the importance of the role of professionals to support parents and carers to support their child. The guide outlines how professionals can support parents effectively and includes advice on supporting parents and carers for professionals in particular roles and contexts.

Supporting Practice in Tackling Child Sexual Abuse (film series)this external link will open in a new window - The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse has created a series of 12 short films to accompany their practitioner guides, to give professionals the knowledge to identify concerns of child sexual abuse, and the confidence to respond to the abuse, and work with the child and their family.

PANTS Makaton Guides / NSPCC Underwear Rule - The NSPCC has created new PANTS resources to keep children who communicate using Makaton safe from sexual abuse. PANTS (the five underwear rules) supports parents and carers to have conversations with their child to help keep them safe from sexual abuse. The resources include Makaton guides explaining the rules and setting out the importance of having these conversations with children.

Barnardo's (barnardos.org.uk) - Resources to help identify and engage young people at risk of sexual abuse and exploitation.

Stop It Now - Advice for professionals working in child sexual abuse prevention, so that they’re well equipped to keep children safe.

Gov.uk - Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Strategy 2021 - Of the 5440 victims and survivors of child sexual abuse that contributed to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) Truth Project, 2021:

  • 88% reported it had impacted on their mental health
  • 54% reported it had affected their relationships, particularly around trust and intimacy
  • 42% reported that it had impacted on their schooling or employment

Other research, including that collated by the government’s ‘Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Strategy’, 2021 suggests that at a minimum,15% of girls (3 in 20) and 5% (1 in 20) of boys experience some form of child sexual abuse.
