Safeguarding children effectively requires a knowledgeable and skilled workforce.  This course aims to provide participants who work with children and young people with an opportunity to learn in a multi-agency training environment.

This course is directed at practitioners and managers who work with children and families that experience neglect.  Participants will be expected to be familiar with the Cumbria multi-agency procedures:

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be able to understand the challenges of identifying neglect in practice settings with children and young people and considering their 'lived lives'.

  • Understand the use of and practical application of the Graded Care Profile when working alongside families to assess and effect change when neglect is an issue.

  • Recognising disguised compliance and how to respond to it, when using the Graded Care Profile to work with families where neglect is a feature.

Cost:  Courses are provided free of charge to non-profit making organisations and CSCP member organisations.  See the LSCB Training Programme and Learning Events Brochurethis external link will open in a new window  for more information.

Working Together defines Neglect as:

The persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs,  likely to result in the serious impairment of the child’s health or development.  Neglect may occur during pregnancy as a result of maternal substance abuse. Once a child is born, neglect may involve a parent or carer failing to:

  • Provide adequate food, clothing and shelter (including exclusion from home or abandonment);

  • Protect a child from physical and emotional harm or danger;

  • Ensure adequate supervision (including the use of inadequate care-givers); or

  • Ensure access to appropriate medical care or treatment.

It may also include neglect of, or unresponsiveness to, a child’s basic emotional needs. (Working Together to Safeguarding Children, 2015)

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • What is Neglect?

  • The Impact of Neglect

  • Being able to identify children and young people at risk of Neglect
