Neglect Conference

On Friday 20 January 2017 Cumbria LSCB hosted the first of three SCR events.  Over 150 frontline staff and managers attended the event with speakers who are nationally recognised experts in Children's Safeguarding.

Speakers included Clare Hyde MBE, Foundation for Families, who spoke about Gender and Neglect and why it matters.  Deb Lee, Consultant Paediatrician for NCUHT and Dr Guinevere Chivers, Clinical Psychologist within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service in Cumbria, delivered an interesting presentation about the 'Effects of Neglect on the developing brain'.

Dez Holmes, Director of Research in Practice, delivered a powerful speech exploring what Neglect means for children and families and reflecting on the evidence and drew out messages from the SCR technical analysis. 

Louise Mason-Lodge, CCG and Deborah Evan, Assistant Director of Children and Families, launched the Cumbria LSCB Neglect Strategythis external link will open in a new windowand Kerry Hammond and Anne Hughes from the Young People's LSCB Shadow Board explained how young people had been involved in its development.

Gill Rigg, Cumbria LSCB Chair said "Our recent Serious Case Reviews have given us an opportunity to review our response to neglect and I am delighted that the work has culminated in this Neglect Strategy and Conference.  The speakers are eminent in their areas and the conference has been specifically targeted to frontline staff, demonstrating our commitment to ensuring that collaboration and working together is key to success".
