Schools play an essential part in promoting positive social and emotional wellbeing for all their pupils and are ideally placed to recognise early signs of problems and support families as well as the child/YP in school. The Department for Education (DfE) has updated guidance for schools on supporting pupils with mental health problems. Updates include: information about school responsibilities in relation to mental health; how to identify behaviours that might be related to mental health problems; working with external professionals and agencies; where to find further support. The Anna Freud Centre has recently published a booklet Supporting mental health and wellbeing in schools: engaging with all parents and carers which explores a range of ways for schools to help children by engaging with parents and carers to improve children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing. The booklet also includes tips as well as case studies showing both parent and schools’ perspectives.
